Keeping Your Pup Safe This Christmas

Holiday Tips from DoodyFree941

Ho-ho-ho, Sarasota dog parents! It’s the most wonderful (and sometimes chaotic) time of the year. Between the lights, guests, and endless treats, Christmas can be just as exciting for our dogs as it is for us – but it also comes with some sneaky hazards. Here’s your quick DoodyFree941 guide to a merry AND safe holiday season for your four-legged family member.

1. Dangerous Decorations

  • Tinsel & ribbon: Super shiny, super tempting, and super dangerous if swallowed (hello, emergency surgery for “linear foreign body”).
  • Glass ornaments: One wagging tail = shattered glass on the floor.
  • Light strands: Chewed cords can cause burns or electrocution.

Tip: Keep low-hanging temptations out of reach or go with pet-safe felt/fabric ornaments.

2. Toxic Holiday Foods (The No-No List)

  • Chocolate (all kinds – the darker, the deadlier)
  • Xylitol (found in sugar-free candy & baked goods)
  • Grapes/raisins (fruitcake, anyone?)
  • Onions, garlic, chives
  • Macadamia nuts
  • Alcohol (yes, some dogs will lap up unattended eggnog)

Tip: Tell guests “People food stays with people!” and keep a treat jar of dog-safe goodies handy so no one feels left out.

3. Holiday Plants to Avoid

  • Poinsettias (mildly toxic – vomiting/diarrhea)
  • Holly & mistletoe (can cause severe GI upset and heart issues)
  • Lilies (deadly to cats, but let’s not risk it for dogs either)
  • Christmas trees: Pine needles can puncture intestines, and tree water with preservatives is toxic.

Tip: Fake plants or high shelves are your friends this season.

New people, loud music, doorbells ringing nonstop – some dogs love it. Create a quiet “safe zone” with their bed, favorite toys, and a white-noise machine. A tired dog is a calm dog, so keep up those daily walks (we’ve got you covered at DoodyFree941 if life gets too busy!).

5. Cold-Weather & Escape Risks

More guests = more open doors. Make sure your dog’s microchip info is current and they’re wearing ID tags. If you’re traveling, double-check the boarding facility or pet sitter.
